FASTECH Installs Shell’s First CNG Fueling Station

Designed and Built a Ground-Up CNG Station in Carson, CA
Shell’s CNG refueling station is the first of several CNG stations planned for Shell terminals along the West Coast.
Avoided Costly Relocation of Obstacles
FASTECH redesigned footings and realigned piping trenches to avoid costly relocation of buried obstructions found during construction.
Saved CNG Tankers Time and Money
This new location enables ethanol tanker trucks to refuel at the same location they fill their tanks, saving time and money.
Met Ambitious Project Completion Goals
Finished the project on time and on budget.

Why FASTECH

FASTECH has an extensive portfolio of CNG station construction, ranging from design-build to station expansion projects.

Shell sought to leverage FASTECH’s experience to design and build a site-specific refueling station to fill private fleets, while also establishing the framework for future CNG station development. FASTECH helped specify and purchase the major project equipment from ANGI Energy Systems, a leading supplier of CNG fueling equipment.

The Project

Shell’s Carson terminal project site presented the construction team with several challenges, like the buried obstructions uncovered during excavation and trenching operations. This site also required FASTECH to coordinate with Shell’s specialty pipeline and electrical utility contractors, who brought power and gas to the station from connection points several thousand feet away.

The Process

  • FASTECH began with a site investigation and development of equipment specs based on the projected fueling requirements for the site. Major equipment was then sourced and purchased before breaking ground to avoid construction delays.
  • FASTECH redesigned footings and realigned trenches for buried piping to avoid costly removal or relocation efforts. FASTECH also participated in regular coordination meetings with other contractors to keep the project on schedule.
  • FASTECH assisted with specifying and purchasing the primary equipment for the project from ANGI Energy Systems, a leading supplier of CNG fueling equipment.

How long did the project take?

The project took approximately 8 months to design and permit, beginning in late 2020. The major equipment was purchased early in the design process to account for the long lead times for delivery.

  • Construction Start ... June 2021
  • Construction Finished ... September 2021
  • Commissioning and First fueling ... October 2021
  • Opening ... November 2021

The Results

FASTECH installed:

  • A twin ANGI CNG compressor
  • A six-pack of external storage vessels
  • A PSB gas dryer
  • Two fast-fill CNG dispensers with high-flow transit-style nozzles
  • Remote system monitoring panels

The location of the new CNG station serves the fleet of ethanol tanker trucks that make regular trips to the ethanol loading rack adjacent to the new CNG station. This allows trucks to refuel at the same location they are filling their tanks, saving time and money. Shell also benefits from the sale of RCNG, a renewable form of natural gas they are producing at plants along the West Coast.
