Demonstrates Hydrogen Demand
ICA’s last hydrogen project rounds out Southern California hydrogen stations that include Hawaiian Gardens, Seal Beach, Anaheim, Corona, and Santa Ana locations.

The Project

The La Mirada station was the sixth and final project in ICA’s first hydrogen refueling station program in North America. The objective was to construct retail hydrogen refueling station infrastructure at an active ICA petroleum gas station using NEL-supplied equipment.

The project was divided into two phases. The first phase involved relocating the current electrical infrastructure that traversed the area designated for the new equipment compound. This was carefully coordinated to minimize any power outages that could affect an adjacent fire station.

Once the utility relocation was complete, FASTECH began the project’s second phase – constructing the hydrogen station.

Why FASTECH?

Iwatani’s development team had previously worked with Fiedler Group and FASTECH on other hydrogen projects. It recognized Fiedler Group and FASTECH as key players in rolling out their first retail hydrogen refueling station program.

Fiedler Group and FASTECH successfully completed the first five projects of this program in Hawaiian Gardens, Seal Beach, Anaheim, Corona, and Santa Ana.

Fiedler Group completed the design and permitting for this project, engaging FASTECH to construct the station.

The Technology

FASTECH utilized a proprietary NEL system comprised of:

  • Two station modules
  • Two dispensers under a new canopy
  • An offload cabinet and HMI for deliveries
  • An assembly of Tenaris high-pressure storage vessels
  • All the ancillary equipment needed to support the new station, including a site emergency shutdown system and security cameras

The Results

The project broke ground in August 2022 and was substantially completed in December 2022. The new hydrogen station is currently being commissioned by the equipment manufacturer.

The project is one of several planned hydrogen refueling stations for ICA and will demonstrate the demand for additional hydrogen refueling infrastructure in California.

The La Mirada station will expand Iwatani’s hydrogen refueling network and provide an additional refueling point for fuel cell vehicle drivers in the surrounding area.
