Clean Energy Fuels Oklahoma City Case Study

FASTECH Builds a CNG Refueling Station in Oklahoma City

Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
FASTECH’s first alternative energy project in Oklahoma.
High Capacity Refueling
FASTECH created 141 time-fill spaces, comprising 57 single and 42 dual k-rail time-fill posts.
Improved Efficiencies
The project will greatly improve efficiencies for the local trucking fleet and distribution network it supports.
Future-Forward
The main gas service was constructed with hundreds of feet of 6” steel pipe, allowing future upgrades to gas pressure without increasing pipe size.

The Project

FASTECH was responsible for constructing a ground-up CNG refueling station to serve fast-fill and time-fill CNG fueling of tractor-trailer cabs and box trucks. The project is one of the first sites developed by Clean Energy Fuels to support trucking fleets for customers with large distribution centers.

In addition to adding two new fast-fill dispensers for rapid refueling of large trucks, FASTECH developed a large portion of the property as a parking area for overnight time-fill refueling via time-fill posts mounted on precast concrete k-rails. The time-fill site will support the simultaneous refueling of more than 140 trucks simultaneously over an 8-10 hour period.

The completed project will significantly enhance operational efficiencies for the nearby trucking fleet and the distribution network it serves. By providing designated parking areas for trucks to refuel overnight, drivers can start each day with a fully fueled truck, eliminating the need to search for refueling locations during the day.

Why FASTECH?

FASTECH has worked with Clean Energy Fuels to build and upgrade dozens of CNG and LNG stations in California, Washington, Arizona, and Kansas.

The Technology

The station utilized a system comprised of the following:

  • Five Clean Energy Fuels CNG compressors
  • Five motor control panels
  • Two PSB natural gas dryers
  • Three high-pressure storage vessels
  • Site emergency shutdown system and security cameras
  • One priority panel
  • One 3-pack of high-pressure storage vessels
  • New dispenser canopy
  • Time-fill system including 57 single time-fill posts and 42 dual time-fill posts
  • Ancillary equipment to support the new station.

The station was constructed with future expansion in mind. FASTECH included the space and infrastructure needed to install a sixth compressor to support higher fueling demand if required.

The Results

The project broke ground in February 2023 and was substantially completed in May 2023. Weather delays hindered the early stages of the project, but the team recovered and reached substantial completion by the original projected date.

Clean Energy Fuels will benefit from developing a multi-faceted refueling station that can support private time-fill fleets and fast-fill refueling of both public and private fleets. Clean Energy Fuels’ customers now have a central location they can incorporate into their fleet logistics and planning, which improves efficiency and reduces long-term costs. The site’s design can support a range of vehicle sizes and could be reconfigured in the future if necessary.
